Cracking Out of the Cosmic Egg

Cracking out of the Cosmic Egg

~An excerpt from Rudolf Steiner, via Kim Graae Munch.

The Cosmic Egg -- Art by Carl Jung

The Cosmic Egg — Art by Carl Jung

Lucifer gives visions. One has to break through them, otherwise one doesn’t break through the shell that’s around every man and covers the real spiritual world. Visions and voices are around us like the shell around a chick. One might see an angel in a vision and when one presses through the vision the angel will change into a snake, Lucifer’s symbol, for at the Temptation he appeared as a snake. Or one might see the colour blue in one’s meditation — if one breaks through it the blue can become red, and then it turns out that we saw our own passions. As a result of his temptation by Lucifer man doesn’t have everything that the Gods have; he received knowledge, but not life. Thereby everything that we know and perceive is permeated by Lucifer and Ahriman. Actually this is also the case with the content of our exercises. If one looks at one’s exercises one will find that they’re constructed in such a way that they never appeal to human egoism — which many people feel is very unpleasant. We don’t meditate about love or truth, for that would only promote egotism. However concepts such as light and warmth that we find in our exercises are things of the physical world, which a man only knows through his physical senses to begin with. These too are Lucifer’s gifts. That’s why we should let the content drop after meditation and make the soul entirely empty of these impressions also. Thereby we renounce everything that comes from Lucifer and Ahriman and prepare ourselves for the pure spiritual world. Then the sense world disappears for us, and a spiritual world opens up before us that has nothing in common with the physical world. An ordinary man is like the chick that would consider its shell to be the real world. If the chick could see it would see the egg’s contents as if it were the whole world. Likewise we see our eggshell or aura spread out around us as the blue dome of the heavens. If we break through our shell the sun and moon become darkened, the stars fall down onto the earth and the spiritual world spreads out in its place.

A man lives in his eggshell — his aura. The Elohim gave us our aura, and through the fall into sin it has become like a shell around us, and we’re in it like a chick in an egg. The stars in the heavens are our boundary and we must break through it with our soul force, just as a chick must break out of its shell through its own power. Then we get into a new world, just as a chick has a new world before it when it has crept out of the egg. And since men all have the same eggshell around them an astronomy could arise that lets the heavenly bodies move along the celestial dome. The eggshell is the Ex Deo nascimur. To break through it and to bring something with us into the spiritual world we must bring what penetrates the shell from the outer spiritual world and that’s common to all; and that’s the Christ. That’s why we say: In Christo morimur and hope that when we’ve broken through the shell we will be awakened again: Per Spiritum Sanctum reviviscimus.

Questions for Members

April 12, 2014 By Amelia Leave a Comment

Sozial Goetheanum

I thought I would share the following questions, which arose while reading the Introductory Lecture of the series The Anthroposophical Movement and the Anthroposophical Society (Steiner, 9/5/24). Find the lecture here.

1. Do I embody the conviction that the spiritual world is a concrete reality in my life? How?

2. How might the spiritual archetype of the Anthroposophical Movement be characterized?

3. Of what significance is it that I am / am not a member of the Anthroposophical Society? Of the First Class of the School for Spiritual Science?

4. How is the Anthroposophical Society functioning currently as an esoteric, yet also completely open society?

5. How does my dream consciousness influence my life? Can I discern spurious from meaningful symbols in my dream life? Can I discern any revelations of spirit from the time between death and birth showing up in my dream consciousness?

6. What do the tree-spirit, the mountain-spirit, the spirit of the rocks reveal to me?

7. How am I progressing towards exact knowledge of the spirit? Can I confront a tree, allowing it to become a void, leaving the space free before my gaze, and allow the spirit-being of the tree to meet me?

8. Can I penetrate with vision into the life of dreamless sleep, and discover therein the connections of karma?

9. Can I recognize the process through which in the consciousness of deep sleep there weaves and lives in me an actual and real nexus of forces which, after waking, lead me into connection with the working out of my destiny, my karma? How can I begin to perceive the activity of these forces?

10. Can a seeker who has not yet achieved continuity of consciousness into dreamless sleep claim true knowledge of karmic connections?

11. Can I understand how history develops through that which individual people carry over from earlier epochs, from prior lives? Can I give an example of how this works?

12. In what ways does my current life have meaning (make sense) only because of what I have experienced in previous lives? In what ways is my current life a reflection of the general condition of humanity at this time? In what ways does the future weave its way into my current life?

13. How do I interpret the significance that my karma has led me in this life to a connection with the Anthroposophical Society? How does this inform my life and my intentions?

Aristotelians and Platonists

Plato and Aristotle

Plato and Aristotle

Steiner talks about two important groups of people who are represented in the Anthroposophical Society, which have different ways of approaching life and spirituality.  These, he roughly sketched as the Aristotelians (followers of Aristotle, Scholastics, Dominicans), and Platonists (followers of Plato, the School of Chartres, Cistercians).  While doing research on these two groups, I drew up a chart of the characteristics of each group.  The link below brings up a rather long pdf file for your perusal.  Corrections and comments are welcome!

More Thoughts on Karma

Cosmic intelligence = Relationships among the hierarchies

When speaking about Cosmic Intelligence, Steiner says “‘Intelligence’ means the mutual relationships of conduct among the higher Hierarchies. What they do, how they relate themselves to one another, what they are to one another, — this is the Cosmic Intelligence” (Karmic Relationships Lecture 8/8/24).

The fall and its further rending among the hierarchies

He speaks about how this Cosmic Intelligence fell to the earth by 900AD, and also about a split in the hierarchy of angels. The planetary intelligences, ruled by Archangels, used to be ruled by the Sun, by Michael. However, now, the rest of the planetary Archangels have split off from Michael’s rulership, and instead follow Oriphiel, of Saturn, and the associated angels have come down to earth to exert their influence here, since here is where the intelligence now is.

One result of this is that karma has been thrown into disarray. Whereas before, the angels of two people who were karmically related would work together to bring about the proper re-meeting of the two in later lives, this cooperation no longer occurs if one angel remained “Michaelic” and the other one took up abode on the earth. This creates incredible splits in relationships, and contributes to social chaos. Angels are the ones who first and foremost assure “the unfolding of karma — in the way the earthly thoughts, the earthly deeds and earthly feelings are transformed and elaborated between death and a new birth” (same lecture).

“Now that all the power is among men, will Michael be able to carry into all the future that which is Eternal in his working — now that that which appears in the physical sun grows darker and vanishes slowly away?”

“Thus, as we see, as an outcome of cosmic events, a split among the Angeloi who were formerly united with Michael. But these Beings themselves partake in the karmic evolution.”

“Michael himself is bringing the power which is to bring order again into the karma of those who have gone with him.”

We must bring order into our karma!

“What is it in the last resort that unites the Members of the Anthroposophical Society? It is that they are to bring order again into their karma. This unites them.”

He brings an example of the different working of the two groups of angels. An individual may have certain periods of lowered consciousness, when they are susceptible to outer influence. In these instances, a Michaelic angel leaves the human free from influence. However, a “fallen” angel that has become more earthly and Ahrimanic, will then dive more deeply into the human being. “An Ahrimanic Angeloi-intelligence takes up abode in him.” This is one way, for example, in which Ahriman becomes an author, by working through these earthly angels’ interweaving with human beings.

So, how do we bring order into our karma?

What does it mean to relate to another human who has a “fallen” angel? How does that impact our relationship, and what we can achieve with them?

I have seen it said (for example in a recent Adriana Koulais post), that it is the human beings that have dragged down the angels, as a kind of necessity, as a result of the increasing materialism on earth. If humans have no nutritious (moral, spiritual) thoughts, feelings, and deeds for the angels to carry up to the hierarchies, they are forced to remain below with man’s increasingly hardened physical and etheric bodies.

Then the question… Michael guards that which is eternal, of duration, in the cosmos. He must caretake this so that the cosmos will again be able to find harmony. However, in order to do this, he must work through human beings on earth, where the power now lies. We are tasked, as anthroposophists, to create a living presence of the Cosmic Intelligence here on earth. What, exactly, does this mean? I take heart that in one respect, that this means that even merely in the act of understanding the cosmic inter-relationships with our human intelligence, we are making steps in that direction. As some of you have mentioned, we carry some responsibility also for sharing and spreading this wisdom amongst mankind, and must strive to find the appropriate avenues to do so.

Steiner warns us repeatedly about Ahriman and his dangers. He tells us as an antidote (to allowing Ahriman to work through us), that we must assert our individuality ever the stronger. This seems so paradoxical. Especially as a writer, for example, we must not let thoughts express themselves through us mechanically, but we should imbue them with our own style, our own personality, to protect them from Ahrimanic influence.

He also speaks in these lectures of how many anthroposophists are like a bee with a stinger, but are afraid to use it for fear of somehow allowing Ahrimanic influence. He says we must act, we must not hesitate and be afraid, but we should strive to unfold our inner initiatives without fear regarding outer materialism and Ahrimanic attacks.

Such a challenge is placed before us!

Do we have the courage to really put ourselves out there and speak for the Spirit in human life? Can we embody spiritual realities in our everyday life?

I welcome discussion and further questions around these issues. These are questions I live with strongly.
